Take Action Now!

“The beginning of the cause of deaths in custody does not occur within the confines of police and prison cells or in the minds of the victims. Initially it starts in the minds of those who allow it to happen.”

– Aboriginal Elder, the late Dr. Jack Davis AO, BEM.

WRITE

Another way to keep up the pressure on the authorities is to write to your local MP expressing your outrage at the treatment of Elder Mr Ward and the obvious failing in the Western Australian Justice System.

DEMAND IMMEDIATE ACTION!

Write to the State Attorney General Hon Christian Porter. We urge supporters who are outraged at the treatment and death in custody of Mr. Ward to write to the State Attorney General of Western Australia Hon Christian Porter MLA. If you feel strongly about this issue then this is just one way you can maintain the pressure on the relevant authorities to ensure accountability and that this situation never occurs again.

Please write, fax or e-mail as a concerned individual and get your local community group, union, church, student guild etc to do so as well. Say that it is unacceptable to you that Mr. Ward died in the way he did, that the Western Australian Government takes responsibility for the safety of people in custody and that we expect the State Government of WA to ensure no more deaths occur in custody.

Specifically; I / We demand the Government of Western Australia;

· Fully and promptly implement the Coroners Findings;

· Have criminal charges laid against those responsible for Mr Wards death, as soon as possible;

· Immediately terminate the contract between G4S and the State of Western Australia;

· Return the responsibility for the custodial transport in WA to the Department of Corrective Services;

· End the privatization of custodial services;

· Use air transport or video conferencing instead of long haul vehicle transport;

· Take immediate steps to reduce Indigenous incarceration and recidivism rates to prevent further Indigenous deaths in custody;

· Hold a public inquiry into systemic racism or Royal Commission into the administration of Justice;

· Amend the Coroners Act 1996 (WA) to ensure that there are positive obligations on the WA Government to respond to coronial recommendations within set periods; and

· Review relevant international human rights instruments and recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and where they have not yet been implemented, that they are now fully implemented and funded in the administration of justice in WA.

Write to:

Hon Christian Porter,

Attorney General of Western Australia.

Postal Address: P. O Box 130, Bullcreek, WA, 6149

Fax: (08) 9332-8880 E-mail: Christian.porter@mp.wa.gov.au

*HOLD THE STATE GOVERNMENT OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA ACCOUNTABLE! *
