Justice not served for custody death: Amnesty International

A human rights group has demanded that State and Federal Governments do more to prevent Aboriginal deaths in custody.

Amnesty International has written to both the Western Australian and Federal Attorneys-General expressing its concern over the investigation into the death of Goldfields elder Mr Ward.

Hundreds have attended a rally in Perth to protest the DPP's decision not to lay criminal charges after an Aboriginal elder died in custody.

Hundreds gathered in Perth on Sunday to protest the Director of Public Prosecutions' decision not to lay charges against anyone in relation to the death of Mr Ward in 2008.

A HEARTBROKEN cousin of an Aboriginal elder who died in custody made a passionate plea for criminal charges to be laid, declaring "we are all human beings''.

STATE Labor MP Ben Wyatt has lashed out at WA?s Director of Public Prosecutions over his handling of the Ward case.

Mr Ward died in the back of a prison van on Australia Day, 2008 in circumstances described by WA’s Coroner as a "disgrace".
